Iowa City Week #11: Reasons to Be Thankful

Image
Happy Thanksgiving Week, everyone! I thought that it would be appropriate to center all that transpired this past week upon the theme of the approaching holiday, Thanksgiving, because there certainly were many things to be grateful for this past week. One of the key things is that   Minnie is still progressing very well ! Bishop Parker and his wife had her and us over for dinner, and in the lesson that followed   we extended a baptismal date of   December 27 . She still has some hurdles to overcome but she has a very sincere desire to be prepared by that particular day; she already has a rock solid testimony of the Restored Gospel, and the members have started to become more involved with her, so now we just have to make sure we do all that we can to help her be prepared to receive the ordinances of baptism and confirmation by the end of the year. She will be visiting family in Chicago for another week and a half so that makes things difficult, but I have faith that it ...

Iowa City Week #10: Mission Tour

Image
G reetings to you all, from the glorious land of Iowa City - The City of Literature! If last week wasn't an indication that the winter is rolling in, this one certainly was. We got a good amount of snow on Veteran's Day and this past   Saturday , so now what used to be a very colorful fall environment a month ago is now a white, much dirtier city. Oh well, it has still been fun to have snowfall and have some cold temperatures nonetheless.  Snow has arrived! Anyway, on to the most exciting news of the week:   we had a Mission Tour!!  Originally Elder Carlos A. Godoy of the First Quorum of the Seventy was going to come to Iowa City (he spoke at this most recent General Conference ), but he had another emergency assignment to fulfill, so   Elder Craig A. Cardon  (also of the First Quorum of the Seventy) and his wife came in his stead ! I am completely happy with that though, not only for the fact that   he is from Mesa, Arizona , but the message...

Iowa City Week #9: It's Cold Outside

Image
Well, I knew it was coming, but I'm not happy about it: the winter weather is finally returning. I very much enjoyed the heat of the summer in Missouri and then early in my time here in Iowa City, but after this short fall it seems that winter has come back to grip the Midwest with an iron fist. We have heard reports of snow and Arctic storms potentially rolling through the area sometime this week... ugh. But oh well, at least we have seen some exciting things this past week, so there is certainly much to be grateful for despite the fact that the cold is returning. In terms of the Work of Salvation,   we found three investigators!  That is the most I have had in a week for quite a while, so that was exciting. Let's hope that Spencer, Nate and Dwight all progress towards baptism. Most of that success came from an exchange I went on with one of my Zone Leaders this week, Elder Styles.  Elder Scott was with Elder Broadbent in North Liberty, Iowa, so this was the third excha...

Iowa City Week #8: Halloween and Stake Conference

Image
Well hello everyone, I hope you all had a most excellent Halloween! Things were pretty interesting for us in Iowa City this weekend. On the actual night of Halloween we had to go home early, but the night before Halloween our ward had a Trunk 'R Treat and potluck dinner for all people to attend, and those were both very fun.  That's quite an impressive trunk! Members hand-drew and constructed this Jack Skellington decoration for the ward party. Sadly we did not manage to get any of our investigators there, but it was still a good opportunity for us to become acquainted with more members.  Chilling out with members the night before Halloween, oh yeah! We have come to realize in the past several weeks that we need to continually do our best to become completely united with the ward, and I feel that we did not do a great job at that this past transfer.  Thus, that is a goal we are certainly working hard to fulfill this transfer, because   the Work of S...
