Venom Review

(Poster Source: IMDb ) As if superhero cinematic universes weren’t already confusing. The MCU might be cohesive and well-organized, but the same can’t be said about the insane cinematic universes that other studios are trying to keep alive. Warner Bros., for one thing, seems to have dug themselves a bottomless pit with the embarrassments that are the DCEU and all other DC Comics projects (although that Joaquin Phoenix Joker film looks promising). And then there is the monstrous force known as Sony. While the video game department of the electronics/media conglomerate is considerably more successful in handling their franchises, the managers behind film franchising don’t have as strong of a track record. This is especially the case with how they've handle their rights to the Spider-Man characters post-Sam Raimi. The two Amazing Spider-Man films were such debacles that in order to keep the characters relevant, Sony had to make an agreement with Marvel Studios to in...

A Star Is Born Review

(Poster Source: IMDb ) We all know that remakes are done quite frequently in Hollywood, but how often do we get movies that have literally been done several times over? From what I have observed, such cases are notably less common. Normally remakes tend to be sort of a one-off thing, an attempt at modernizing an older classic for the sake of nostalgia-driven profits and (hopefully) artistic merit. But as far as A Star Is Born is concerned, who even really knows what the end goal is. After all, in this version starring Bradley Cooper (also the director, a producer, a co-screenwriter, and co-songwriter) and Lady Gaga, we now have the fourth iteration of practically the same tale. I wouldn’t be able to tell you the specifics of how these movies compare to one another since this is the only version I've seen, but I’m still willing to bet that the core similarities are there. Notwithstanding, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut has received plenty of attention both from cr...

September Movie Review Roundup

Image
I may just have to keep on doing this right up until I’m done with school. Oftentimes I find myself so caught up in juggling the various activities of my life that writing mini-reviews on Facebook tend to drop down my list of priorities. But I do recognize that if I do not publicize some very good films hidden from the spotlight, they won’t get the desired amount of exposure. That being said, September was not as strong of a month for film releases. Most of the theatrical releases were largely disappointments or just plain unexciting. Forgive me if that sounds unfair to teams of hardworking, talented filmmakers, but the fact is that I wasn’t so enthused by what came to theaters. What I did see and not mention on the blog will be documented briefly here, though. There is a small but healthy mix of theatrical and Netflix Original films featured in this review roundup. Hopefully what I have to share, then, may point you towards some quality films to watch prior to the overcrowded...
