Lara Croft: Tomb Raider vs. Tomb Raider

Image
This point has been made previously, but video game movies still have yet to hit their stride. Hope may be built up for a new, perhaps more promising adaptation, but such optimism is usually crushed by unmet expectations. Such was especially the case in 2016 when multiple upsetting video game adaptations were released in theaters. Recently, however, Netflix and animation house Frederator Studios teamed up to adapt Konami’s Castlevania games into a TV series. Despite its criminally short length, the solid show proved that video games actually could be legitimately translated into another art form. As such, I had renewed hope for the cinematic Tomb Raider reboot. One could argue that this was a series that would benefit from a restart, given how controversially exploitative and painfully cheesy the original films were. After Lara Croft’s image was improved with the rebooted series of video games, that became even more evident. (Photo Source: Wallpapersite ) Therefore,...

A Wrinkle in Time Review

Image
(Poster Source: IMDb ) The situation surrounding this particular film is a curious one, for it represents what I interpret as a problem with Disney’s current production pipeline: they still are averse to risk-taking. This is perhaps more prevalent now than ever before. Who can really blame the mega-studio for that trend, though, given that seemingly every time they gamble on unique live-action projects with substantial budgets — John Carter , The Lone Ranger , Tomorrowland , and Alice Through the Looking Glass all come to mind — they lose. It’s a shame, really, for now Disney almost always produces films solely through their animation studios (at least they’re still creating original work), the LucasFilm franchises, Marvel, and the absurd amount of live-action remakes/reboots/sequel things in the works. I’m not saying these films are bad, I just wish that Disney wasn’t so corpora...

So yeah, this is a pretty big deal — Super Smash Bros. will make a triumphant return sometime this year! Granted, I’m sure most Nintendo fans suspected that Nintendo would announce a brand new Super Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo Switch at some point. However, when the surprise word came in the most recent Nintendo Direct, fans (myself included) still freaked out. No singular Nintendo brand will ever satisfy and excite fanboys quicker than this masterful fighting game series. When you do that by announcing a title’s release within the same year, then fans wildest dreams become realized. But then all of that begs the question, one which is surely on every Nintendo fan’s mind: who will be the new characters? More importantly, which third-party characters may or may not join in on the smashing? That is my key concern here. Characters which Nintendo can incorporate into the Smash world from their own franchises are becoming scarcer with each new installment, but the ...
