Spoiler-Filled Discussion of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been marketed as not only the concluding chapter of the sequel trilogy — dubbed “The Age of Resistance” by Lucasfilm — but also as a definitive end to the entire 9-film saga.
After how disastrously divisive The Last Jedi was, Disney knew they needed to give enough time to J. J. Abrams and company to make the best film they could. With that, we now have The Rise of Skywalker, which I would like to think was made with the best of intentions but botched in its execution.
The Rise of Skywalker retains cast members such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher (posthumously), Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams, and Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine, while also bringing in Richard E. Grant and Dominic Monaghan for some supporting roles.
My synopsis of the film would be:
“A year after Luke Skywalker sacrificed his life to help the Resistance escape from Crait, the survivors learn the horrifying news of Sheev Palpatine, who was long believed to be dead. Shortly thereafter, Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca and their droid friends set out to find the secrets necessary to defeat Palpatine, suppress the First Order, and unite the Galaxy against evil.”
As has been the case with our Star Wars roundtable discussions throughout the year, the length of our reviews has led to me declining to write a full summary of our thoughts.
But in the end, what we got with The Rise of Skywalker is a definite mixed bag. The three of us experienced a wide variety of emotions that left different impressions. Unlike with other movies in the sequel trilogy, those positions have been shuffled around. This time, I outright hated the movie, while recognizing its good virtues. Jared admitted to having fun, but much less for anything the film does well; he more so enjoyed watching us react to dumb things, while also bracing himself for the cringe-worthy plot points spoiled to him by leaks several months ago. Justin finds himself in a position where he agreed with many of our criticisms and wishes it could have been better overall, but still likes it. Regardless of that, though, we all still encourage you to watch the movie and formulate your own opinion.
I hope you enjoy our thoughts on the highly controversial penultimate installment of the series!
